Ilhan Omar is facing scrutiny again, but this time it’s not for something she has done; instead, it’s for something her daughter has been accused of doing.

The Minnesota Democrat was approached by a journalist this week and asked about her daughter Isra Hirsi’s, alleged support from Cuban sources to conduct anti-American left-wing activism within the United States.

The accusations were contained in a State Department report issued earlier this month.

The 100-page report, titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” describes Cuba as a significant strategic threat despite its relatively limited economic and military capabilities.

The report alleges that the Cuban government has infiltrated American institutions, cultivated relationships with sympathetic activists, supported left-wing militant groups, and used organizations operating within the United States to advance Havana’s interests.

The report links alleged Cuban influence to a range of political movements and events, including the growth of militant left-wing organizations, protests following George Floyd’s death, and pro-Palestinian activism on college campuses.

It identifies organizations such as the Democratic Socialists of America, the National Network on Cuba, the Communist Party USA, CODEPINK, Black Alliance for Peace, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

The report also names political commentator Hasan Piker, Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, journalist Amy Goodman, and Hirsi, Military.com reported.

As supporting evidence, the report cites the National Network on Cuba’s plans to organize demonstrations at military bases, federal buildings, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities if the United States were to threaten or attack Cuba.

It also states that Black Alliance for Peace circulated a guide identifying 1,335 military and law enforcement facilities.

Additionally, the report points to Cuba-related travel, solidarity events, anti-embargo advocacy, and favorable public statements about Cuba by the individuals and organizations it identifies.

The report characterizes these activists and organizations as Cuban “front groups and fellow travelers.”

However, criticism of U.S. policy toward Cuba or participation in solidarity efforts does not, by itself, establish that an individual is acting on behalf of the Cuban government.

Some of the report’s claims are based on documented espionage cases.

It highlights the case of Ana Belén Montes, a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst who pleaded guilty in 2002 to conspiracy to commit espionage after working on behalf of Cuban intelligence.

WATCH:

Former U.S. diplomat Manuel Rocha pleaded guilty in 2024 to secretly acting as an agent of the Cuban government for decades.

Along with the case of Ana Belén Montes, the report cites Rocha’s conviction as evidence that Cuban intelligence has successfully recruited individuals with access to sensitive U.S. government information.

The report goes further, however, by placing overt political advocacy, ideological sympathy, and covert government direction along the same spectrum. Cuban officials rejected the document, arguing that it serves as a justification for maintaining U.S. economic pressure on the island, the outlet reported.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the administration’s campaign as a new form of McCarthyism.

The Cuba report follows President Donald Trump’s July 16 address on election integrity, during which he alleged that China had obtained information from 220 million American voter records.

The White House said Chinese entities purchased, stole, or hacked voter data and accused intelligence officials of downplaying the scope of the activity.

An administration adviser also acknowledged that the intelligence community had found no evidence that any foreign power altered votes in the 2020, 2022, or 2024 elections.

China denied interfering in U.S. elections and dismissed Trump’s allegations as fabricated. Despite those denials, the administration cited the disclosures to bolster its broader election agenda, including proposals requiring voter identification and proof of citizenship.

Trump also referenced declassified intelligence identifying Russia, Iran, North Korea, and unspecified nonstate actors as entities capable of compromising portions of U.S. election infrastructure.

Rep.
