Sen. John Fetterman is pushing back against a damaging report based on leaked communications with his staff, dismissing the allegations as \u201clies, half-truths, innuendos\u201d and \u201csmears.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Pennsylvania Democrat is also receiving support from an unexpected corner, with Republican Sen. Dave McCormick defending his colleague against what he described as an effort by disloyal staff and political opponents to silence him.<\/p>\n
The response comes days after a Wall Street Journal investigation portrayed Fetterman as frequently resistant to constituent meetings and other routine Senate responsibilities.<\/p>\n
The report has prompted unusually sharp criticism from Pennsylvania Democrats, some of whom have already pointed publicly toward the senator\u2019s 2028 reelection year.<\/p>\n
\u201cPer usual \u2014 lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous,\u201d Fetterman said in a statement responding to the allegations.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo matter how many smears or stories, I\u2019m proud to continue to deliver for Pennsylvania,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The Journal report relied partly on internal text messages and interviews with former staff members who described Fetterman as reluctant to participate in certain constituent meetings, Senate hearings and public events.<\/p>\n
Among the examples cited were exchanges involving representatives from Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia and a group of paralyzed veterans seeking meetings with the senator.<\/p>\n
The report also described Fetterman as increasingly focused on Israel and media appearances while becoming more distant from traditional Democratic political activity and some members of his own staff.<\/p>\n
Several Pennsylvania Democrats responded forcefully, including Rep. Chris Deluzio, who accused Fetterman of \u201cpathetic behavior\u201d and said the senator lacked a sufficient \u201csense of duty.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is not up for the high office he was elected to \u2014 and we in Pennsylvania will do something about it in 2028,\u201d Deluzio wrote.<\/p>\n
Rep. Brendan Boyle and DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta have also criticized Fetterman, while the Journal reported that potential Democratic challengers are considering whether to oppose him in a 2028 primary.<\/p>\n
McCormick, however, took the opposite approach and publicly defended Fetterman.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese stories are the latest example of outrageously disloyal staff and forces on the Left using anonymous leaks to cancel my friend John Fetterman,\u201d McCormick wrote on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey hate that he is an independent thinker who refuses to fall into line so they want to silence him,\u201d the Republican senator added.<\/p>\n
The two Pennsylvania senators have developed an unusually friendly working relationship despite belonging to opposing parties.<\/p>\n
Fetterman has said he would not campaign against McCormick if the Republican seeks reelection in 2030, describing him publicly as a friend.<\/p>\n
They have also established a joint fundraising committee called Common Ground PA, according to Federal Election Commission records.<\/p>\n
The committee, registered in July, lists Fetterman for PA and Friends of Dave McCormick among its participating organizations.<\/p>\n
McCormick said the pair intends to continue working together on Pennsylvania priorities, including jobs, housing, infrastructure and environmental funding.<\/p>\n
Their relationship stands in contrast to the increasingly hostile reaction Fetterman is receiving from some members of his own party.<\/p>\n
Fetterman entered the Senate in 2023 as a progressive Democrat but has since broken with his party on several high-profile issues, particularly Israel, immigration and some Trump administration nominees.<\/p>\n
Those disagreements have increased his support among some Republican voters while generating frustration among progressive Democrats.<\/p>\n
The latest controversy, however, is centered less on ideology than on allegations involving Fetterman\u2019s engagement with constituents and the basic day-to-day work of his office.<\/p>\n
Fetterman is now rejecting those accounts outright and portraying them as attacks originating from disgruntled former staff members.<\/p>\n
