Ellen DeGeneres is pushing back against a lawsuit connected to a California car crash, arguing that the case should not move forward because she was not properly served with legal documents.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit stems from an alleged traffic collision in Santa Barbara County in October 2023. A woman claims DeGeneres ran a stop sign and struck her Tesla, causing injuries and damages.<\/p>\n
Before the court addresses the accident claims, DeGeneres\u2019 legal team is focusing on a procedural issue: whether she legally received notice of the lawsuit.<\/p>\n
Court documents dated January 21 state that DeGeneres\u2019 lawyers dispute the way the lawsuit papers were delivered.<\/p>\n
The documents were reportedly left on December 23, 2025, at the receptionist desk of Neuman + Associates, a business management firm.<\/p>\n
DeGeneres\u2019 legal team argues that this location was not her home, residence, or regular place of business.<\/p>\n
The filing states that Neuman + Associates \u201cis not Ms. DeGeneres\u2019 dwelling house, usual place of abode, or usual place of business.\u201d<\/p>\n
The response also says DeGeneres was not present when the documents were left there.<\/p>\n
The woman suing DeGeneres claims further attempts were made to deliver the papers at NKSFB, LLC on January 6 and January 7.<\/p>\n
During those attempts, the papers were allegedly left with an \u201cEmployee\/Security Guard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Neuman + Associates is a division of NKSFB, but DeGeneres\u2019 lawyers say that still does not make the delivery legally valid.<\/p>\n
The filing argues, \u201cThere was no reason to believe Ms. DeGeneres would be there at all, and specially not on those two random days in January.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her lawyers also challenged the idea that a building security guard could accept sensitive legal documents on her behalf.<\/p>\n
The filing states, \u201cIt should be reasonably apparent to anyone, especially a process server, that a security guard at a 20-story building is not \u2018in charge\u2019 of a business on the fifth floor of that building.\u201d<\/p>\n
Proper service is a key step in a lawsuit. A defendant must receive formal notice before a case can properly proceed.<\/p>\n
If a court finds that service was not completed correctly, the plaintiff may need to attempt delivery again.<\/p>\n
That would not automatically end the lawsuit, but it could delay the case and keep the focus on procedure before the accident claims are considered.<\/p>\n
Harley Neuman, who heads Neuman + Associates and serves on the board of the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund, submitted a statement supporting DeGeneres\u2019 position.<\/p>\n
In documents dated January 21, he said, \u201cI have a business relationship, through Neuman + and am generally familiar with Ms. DeGeneres\u2019 business operations and personal living situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Neuman confirmed that documents were left at the office but said DeGeneres was not there at the time.<\/p>\n
He also said there was no interaction with the process server, no explanation of what the documents contained, and no signed acknowledgment of receipt.<\/p>\n
He added that he was not aware of any copy of the summons and complaint being mailed to the office.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit was filed in September 2025 and is tied to an alleged October 2023 crash in Santa Barbara County.<\/p>\n
The plaintiff claims DeGeneres failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with her Tesla.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit accuses DeGeneres of negligence and says the plaintiff suffered injuries in the crash.<\/p>\n
The woman is seeking an unspecified amount in damages.<\/p>\n
DeGeneres, who turned 68 on January 26, currently lives in the United Kingdom with her wife, Portia de Rossi.<\/p>\n
The couple relocated in 2024, adding another layer to the dispute over how legal papers should be delivered.<\/p>\n
When a defendant lives outside the country, legal service can become more complicated and may require additional procedures.<\/p>\n
The court date is scheduled for April 30.<\/p>\n
At that hearing, the judge may consider whether DeGeneres was properly served and whether the lawsuit can move forward.<\/p>\n
If the judge agrees with DeGeneres\u2019 legal team, the plaintiff may have to serve the documents again using a legally accepted method.<\/p>\n
